"Are you saying I'm fat?!!"

Writer: Bhanumati MadhwaniBhanumati Madhwani

To begin with - I deal with plus size clothing for women’s wear and recently had a chance to put up a stall in a Diwali Mela. This was my very first experience of putting up a stall and I must say it was a whole new experience.

Since my whole collection was of plus size, I put my collection on display along with a few dress materials to give it a mix. All sorts of women came to my stall, some were friendly, some were chatty and some were really interested in my work and joined the network (good for me).

So coming back to the kind of women I met; now finally there was a lot of women who took me by surprise. This is how it happened - being in plus size I saw a few prospects of obviously plus size women, so I asked them “Mam, would you like to see my collection on plus size?”

Response - “Are you saying this because I’m fat?” AND another response from another lady - “You offering me Plus size only because I’m fat?”

Now people who don’t know me - I’m fat and I have been the same since my teens. Honestly, I was stunned by their response. All I could say was, “Mam I too am fat and I’m doing something that I like and would love to contribute more towards plus size wear so we have more options.”

Is there a right way to handle such women/mentality? I would love to hear ‘how’.

And that’s when I realised, all plus size females are ashamed to buy XL clothes in open, they would rather secretly go online an click on 4XL than admit that they wear big clothes. Go to any big store in a mall and within few minutes all the XL and XXL sizes are gone.

Women!! What are you ashamed of?! Honestly, I would love to know.

Just a few #IroniesOfLife.
